Last B.O.B.
FAQs update: 3/21/06
1. Why is there a WorldFolk
Battle of the Bands (B.O.B.)?
Bands can compete for
prizes, build their mailing list, sell their merchandise (venue
permitting), gain valuable experience, and network with other
musicians. Last, and not least of all, it's a lot of fun!
2. How can I enter the WorldFolk
Battle of the Bands? Is it only for bands or can solo singer
/ songwriters and duo acts compete? Is it only "folkies"?
WorldFolk's Battle of
the Bands (B.O.B.) is open to bands, musical groups, and duos
of two or more members performing "live" music on stage,
playing any style and genre of music. Bands must play original
music only. Sorry, no cover bands, or cover tunes in your
set. Two of the categories are Songwriting and Originality,
so playing covers would subtract way too many points from your
score. Sorry, solo artists cannot compete in B.O.B.
3. How can my band enter the WorldFolk
Battle of the Bands?
Registering for the WorldFolk
B.O.B. Battle of the Bands is easy. Just Click
Here for our B.O.B. Registration page, and Here
for our B.O.B. Waiver page. Both forms are required to register.
All bands must submit a Waiver Form.
For bands with members under 18, a separate Waiver
Form will also need to be submitted for each of those members,
and signed by a parent or guardian. Download, print, and
complete these forms, and then mail them to: WorldFolk Foundation,
BOB Battle of the Bands, PO Box 29053, Las Vegas NV 89126-3053
USA, along with a check or money order for $40.00 for the registration
fee, a press kit or bios, and a CD or tape demo. It is
not necessary for the CD or tape demo to be professionally produced.
Please be sure to read the B.O.B. Rules
page, and the rest of this page as well.
Or, you can submit online through Sonicbids and
get a 3-month membership at a special rate. Please note:
You will still be required to submit the B.O.B. Waiver
Form from this web-site in order to complete your registration.
Incomplete registrations will not be processed. Click
Here for the B.O.B. Waiver Form.
4. Is it possible to enter into
the Competition and be a member of more than one band or group?
Yes, all you need to
do is send in a separate Registration Form
and Waiver Form for each of the
bands / groups. Each band must pay their Application Fee
separately; Applications and Fees cannot be combined.
5. My group has nine members in
it. If I want to compete in the Competition, do all of
them have to send in an Application?
No. To enter your band, one person must represent the band
and send in the Registration Form,
Application Fee, and Wavier Form.
And each band member under 18 years of age must submit a Wavier Form signed by a parent or guardian.
6. I've entered the Competition
by sending the Registration package to WorldFolk. What
happens next?
WorldFolk will contact
you to let you know that we received your package. Once
you have been assigned a venue, date, and time, you will be notified
and asked to acknowledge receipt of this information and whether
or not you will be able to participate. We need you to
respond promptly so we can fill in the scheduled spot if your
band cannot play for any reason.
7. Can my friends and family attend?
All WorldFolk Events
are open to the public. Friends and family members may
enter by paying at the door, if there is a cover charge, depending
on the venue. Road crew must also pay at the door.
At all-ages venues, children 4 years and under are free.
You must be 21 years or older to enter any establishment which
sells liquor or allows gaming in Nevada. Valid ID must
be shown at the door. Band members are admitted free on
the date they compete, as long as they carry/wear their B.O.B.
ID.
8. If some members of my band are
under 21 can we still play in the B.O.B.?
Yes, you can play, and
we will try to place under-aged bands in all-ages venues.
If you are scheduled to play in a 21+ venue, and the venue allows
band members under the age of 21 to play in their venue, your
under-aged band members will only be allowed to enter to set-up,
play, and then breakdown and leave the venue. They will
have to wait outside until their turn to play. All venues
are different. Some venues do not allow band members under
21 at all. Each band member under 18 years of age must
submit a separate Wavier Form signed
by a parent or guardian when registering for the B.O.B.
9. I'm in a band from Idaho and
we want to play, but we can only play on weekends, due to work,
school, and / or travel schedules. Can we be guaranteed
to play on a weekend?
We will try to schedule
out-of-town bands for weekends to the best of our ability, if
you are traveling a long distance for one of the B.O.B. shows.
We try to schedule bands as close to home as possible, when possible.
Although most of the B.O.B. shows are on weekends, bands that
are local to their own area could possibly be scheduled for a
week night. Bands are responsible for their own transportation
and lodging.
10. Will there be Prizes?
Yes, prizes are listed Here! There
will also be door prizes and giveaways for the audience members
too.

11. How will the Competition be
judged?
Bands will be judged by a panel of 3 judges on the seven categories
listed below. (Please see our Judging
Criteria page for more complete information, with categories
defined.)
* Musicianship
* Visual Presentation
* Originality
* Audience Response
* Song Writing
* Professionalism
* Overall Entertainment Value
Each category will be scored on a point system of 1 - 10 points
per category, per judge. Your total score will be posted
online Here.
12. Are there "Rounds"
and Finals? How does my band get to the next "Round"
and Finals?
There are no "Rounds"
or Finals. Each band gets to play a 30 minute set, only
one time in the B.O.B. Festival. So, go out there and give it
your all! Your band will be scored with points as described
above. Also see our Judging Criteria
page and the B.O.B. Rules page for
more information. The categories are also defined on that
page. The bands with the top three scores at the end of
the Festival win, and will be contacted about their prizes at
that time.
13. Do we need to sell tickets in
advance for the shows? Is this just a "popularity
contest," or are we judged on our music?
This is not just a popularity
contest. See our Judging Criteria
page for more information. Also see questions 11 and 12,
above. Although WorldFolk B.O.B. does not require bands
to sell tickets in advance, we do encourage all bands to promote
themselves. Part of what you will be judged on is Audience
Response. If you're serious about the music business, people
need to know you're out there playing. It is beneficial
to you to have a support network out there. Bands need
to work on building a following. Let everyone know when
and where they can come see you play and encourage them to come.
This is a part of the music business everywhere you go.
Some venues do require each band to bring a certain number of
people to the shows. This is beyond our control.
If there is a minimum at a certain venue, you'll need to let
us know ahead of time if you can't make that minimum. If
you cannot, it may not be the right venue / show for you yet.
Most shows do have a cover charge at the door for friends, family,
and fans.
14. What if my band cancels, do
we get a refund?
We ask bands to list
any scheduling conflicts they have on the B.O.B. Registration
Form. We do our best to accommodate the scheduling
conflicts listed on your Registration Form.
If your band cancels for any reason, or does not accept an assigned
date, place, or venue, and that date is not listed as a scheduling
conflict on your Registration Form,
or your band disqualifies themselves for any reason, including
incomplete registrations, refunds will not be issued. If
your Registration Package is incomplete, we will notify you by
e-mail or phone and give you a deadline to complete it.
If you do not complete your Registration Package by the deadline,
we will consider you withdrawn from the B.O.B. Festival and you
will not receive a refund. See the Refund Policy on the
B.O.B. Rules page for further information.
Refunds will only be issued in the event that B.O.B. cannot schedule
your band to play.
15. If there is more than one venue
in my city, can my band choose which venue they'd prefer to play
at? What about time slot?
Bands will be assigned
their date, time, and venue by WorldFolk B.O.B. Sorry,
we cannot take such requests in fairness to all.
